WIP Shelter,

I’m experimenting with color but I don’t have anything together enough to post it here yet. Part of me wants to give the girls each a contrasting color scheme, like oranges and browns for fox and whites and blues for rabbit, but I haven’t gotten that to look good. It pops out fox, who really should be curled within rabbit, not distracting from her.

Anyway as always I will blog it as soon as I’ve gotten something workable. In the meantime, deeper shadows:

More progress on the flag WIP

My plan for today was to work a lot on the flag wip and finish the sketch base on Shelter or Douglas (probably Shelter first as someone is waiting on that) but a whole lot of stuff happened including getting locked out of the house and having to call a locksmith from my neighbor’s cell phone. My neighbor is super nice, by the way, and I wish I had brought him a pie when he moved in. Except that any pie I baked would probably be so ruined it’d be poison… all that time I should have been learning to cook I spent doodling.

Anyway, I will have to extend my plans into tomorrow as well. Flag is almost done and Shelter is calling. Douglas is stuck on the top of his hill and will wait for me in abject terror.

At some point in the process on every image I create I check “Sample All Layers” on blur and smudge and I don’t look back. Everything from this point on is additive and worked on one layer. This is where it starts to feel like painting.

WIP FitS Window, Part 11

So I spent all night awake last night… again. I swear that art happens more easily at 4am, but I cannot offer any explanation. I did a lot tonight… a lot of tiny tiny things, so I’m going to post some before and after detail shots.

First, as soon as I imagined the hands on the end of the branches I started looking forward to detailing them. I’ve gotten some done, I have been starting with the central image of the string on the antlers and working out in my cleanup sweep.

I did some work on the largest fruit’s face. It’s still unclear whether it is a mask or a face, and that’s my intention. The fruit has no nose, if you were reading before when I first sketched the faces, because I don’t think anyone would find a nose appealing to eat. Trees make fruit for eating and seed pooping. So these faces must be edible and delicious looking to qualify as fruit!

A lot was done to clean up the strings, and some of it I’m very proud of but isn’t easy to see from this image. At some point before I finish this wip someone please remind me to do some string closeups of the real highlights.

WIP FitS Window, Part 8

I did a whole lot last night but was too tired to post it when I was done and not smart enough to post in a couple more steps as I went along. Here is the string, and the beginning of color, and a preview of the first round of shading. I’ve given up on this being a stained glass window, it’s way too detailed for that, so maybe Allegory and hyasynth will accept this instead anyway if I’m lucky.

Moth part 18, refining the face

Still deciding on the hair but I think I will keep it white, which means redoing the texture and shadow for the most part. I lightened her skin which helps the whole composition and she starts to be as ghostly and fairy like as the moths. There’s still a lot of work to be done on the eyes, but the milkiness is cool.

In addition to cleaning up the moths a lot I also played with the colors some. I am considering what I have here: her dress is less saturated so that it becomes like the earth and her hair is white so that she becomes another moth herself. It makes her indistinct except for her skin, which I like, but I don’t know yet if this is too indistinct.

… I want her to emerge. I really love that word for this.

Moth part 15, backlit

The horizon is done and I’ve started redoing the hair with the backlighting, and it’s like not nearly as cool as the last hair, so it’s probably where I’ll be focusing attention, while I figure out what to do with the moths!

I still keep trying to add strings in my head but I think this has really reached string capacity.
