Ever since I was painfully disengaged from digital media, I’ve been slowly exploring new things. A friend pointed out: They are decidedly non-digital experiences I’m seeking. I’ve been baking, working big, working from life. I have been messing with clay, although unsuccessfully so far. I spent hours sanding and gessoing wood for painting, more of a meditation than anything else, as I then simply painted most of the blocks red, seeking an answer to some very pressing questions about the color.

So okay, I thought I’d do some reusable stencils. I’ve got a friend into stenciling things all over places. He will remain unnamed but his enthusiasm for an xacto blade and some pizza boxes was contagious, and it sounded deliciously non-digital. I decided my first one could be half a pig head like from this painting, googled some how-tos, and then went out to buy some plastic.

When I was sketching I ran out of paper, I didn’t really plan it out super well but in this case anyway I didn’t have to – the sketch got completely eaten in the process. Masking tape to the rescue.

I’m thinking next time I’ll pull the protective cover off before I carve it out, it will be easier to be precise. I also need to change my blade more often, they get dull really fast on this plastic. A bigger cutting mat would be handy, mine is only 6″ on the longest side.

This was hard on my fingers but a lot of fun. I think I’ll be making more. I tested it out with a marker to see if anything needed to be smoothed out, this is the result.

Same base sketch as the digital piece I was working on, I made a pencil version so I could enter it into a contest that requires traditional media. I also clothed her because you know, contest. The back of this bathing suit is a kind of homage to a dress designed by a friend of mine.

Animal crackers and paper craft. I did this last week but have finally gotten around to posting it. These are cool, you can print them and fold them and stick them on your desk. I fully intend to do more paper craft and post it here. These are for sale in a limited edition version at DUltd only but I will have others for general sale on etsy or maybe for free, depending.

In any case… TONS of fun.

Sketchbook monsters & draft.

I love drawing weird little monstrous persons. I had the sketchbook last night and this morning and went to town with them. Here are some that I liked the best:

As a note, the “cannon that can walk” was my son’s idea. He also wanted it to walk on the ceiling, but I am not that awesome on short notice.

While I have my sketchbook out, I might as well show you a draft for the one coming after the arterial piece:

That’s a kite that she’s holding, it wasn’t clear. I will probably ditch the kite or do something more abstracted to make it obvious. I want to make pretty kite tails with very nicely tied bows and hang them in my house. The kite is less important (unless it has bows on it).
